The Worrisome Wanderers: Let the Journey Begin!

Welcome to our channel! We are The Worrisome Wanderers, and our goal is to help fellow travelers learn more about the impact we have on the environment in order to encourage smarter and more sustainable choices. We each hope to educate and help our viewers make choices that are right for them and the environment. We look forward to going on this journey with you!
If you have ever traveled somewhere, you probably realized just how much travel can impact your personal views. It’s among the cheesiest clichés that exists: “That trip was life-changing!” While cheesy, the saying still has its place. You never know just what experiences and perspectives you will gain. Whether it’s a nine-day language immersion trip to Costa Rica or a five-day mission trip to Frakes, Kentucky, travel has the ability to modify your mind and make memories. However, travel doesn’t only impact us at the personal level. Have you ever thought about the impact your travels have on the environment?
Travel’s impact on the environment has a variety of viewpoints. Some take the stance that planes are more carbon efficient than cars, so air travel is better for the environment, like Alastair Bland with the Smithsonian Magazine. Others call for everyone to stay home and completely end travel outside of a one-hour radius from your home, like Jack Miles of the Washington Post. However, many large corporations that have multiple locations require travel in order to conduct their business, and many governments rely on the income from tourism to function. On the other hand, some may argue that climate change isn’t real, so there is no need to worry about the impact travel is having on the environment; however, according to NASA, 97 percent of scientists agree that climate change is happening. Some may also argue that climate change isn’t their problem, it is the next generation’s. However, if we continue to have that mindset, the natural beauties we are traveling to see won’t exist for the next generation.
While stopping travel all together is an option, it is not necessary to decrease the environmental impact of travel. In the past few decades, the rise of ecotourism has made travel more sustainable by changing how travelers impact the environment in the places they visit. Ecotourism is when travelers go to natural areas that offer a place to stay in a way that is environmentally responsible. While this type of tourism will greatly decrease tourism’s environmental impact, not enough travelers are utilizing it, instead opting for more luxurious and convenient vacations through large companies that are not only more harmful to the environment but in many cases, detrimental to local communities and economies. Other solutions to help travel’s impact on the environment include the creation of more national policies protecting the environment and limiting the impact of tourism, travelers looking into more eco-friendly methods of traveling and lodging, and caps being put on carbon emissions due to tourism. All of these examples are steps in the right direction, but unless they can be enforced and followed, no significant change will be made.
It’s obvious that climate change is a real issue for the United States and for the world, and if we have any way to stop or reverse it, we should take it. We know that not everyone will be willing to take super dramatic steps, so instead, we plan to educate potential travelers and provide them with alternate methods of travel and vacation that are better for the environment. Instead of renting a large SUV for a trip, try getting a group or forming a double date to enjoy your vacation with. Much of our vlog will be focused in and around Lexington, specifically regarding the transportation sectors of the city, such as personal, public, and air vehicle usage. There are better ways to enjoy a vacation that don’t involve having so much waste!
